Episode 4 - A Chance for Peace

Richard Armitage in Spooks, episode 4
Lucas goes to Liverpool Street station to meet a contact from Damascus.

But he knows that there are others at the station who want the man dead.

Warning the contact.

Briefing the rest of the team about Khordad, al-Qaeda's number 3.

The team phones the number on the SIM card handed to Lucas at the station. It's Khordad.

Ros wants Lucas to ask Elizabeta to find out if the Russians are involved.

Lucas isn't happy about it. "Elizabeta's not a spy."

But he agrees to ask her.

Back on the Grid, Lucas passes on Elizabeta's information to Harry as he and Ros go to meet Khordad.

Watching Harry on CCTV.

Lucas has prepared a list of possible high-profile targets for the bomb that Khordad has warned Harry about.

Watching the Home Secretary's statement to Parliament.

Khordad calls Harry. The statement doesn't go far enough, so he won't give the location of the bomb that's due to explode in London in less than two hours.

Khordad is at the Victoria and Albert Museum, being tailed by Jo and Ben. Ros orders that he be picked up as he leaves the museum.

The Grid waits anxiously as CO19 races to the museum.

He's been picked up - but not by C019.

Lucas goes to see Elizabeta again. She's angry with him because he didn't tell her the truth about his Damascan contact. The FSB know all about him.

The FSB have told her about the bomb that's due to go off at 3pm. He already knows about it.

But there's more.

The FSB have persuaded the bomber to bring forward the explosion by 10 minutes, and have told Elizabeta to tell Lucas. If he tells MI5 and prevents the bomb going off, they'll know where his loyalties lie - they'll kill him and Elizabeta. If he says nothing and allows the bomb to go off early, people will die.

He goes to Connie for advice. "It's the Coventry dilemma all over again," she says.

"In the Second World War," she explains, "the British broke the Germans' Enigma code. We knew everything they were planning to do, including the date of an attack on the city of Coventry. The problem was, if Churchill ordered an evacuation, then the Germans would know we'd broken their code. If he didn't, then thousands of people would die."

"What did he do?"

"Nothing. On the night of November 14th 1940, 515 German bombers blitzed Coventry. In the morning thousands were dead. But we still had the code. And the code won us the war."

He tells the others about the change of time.

"If we stop the bomb, Lucas' cover is blown and the Russians will kill him," explains Connie. "If we don't, then dozens of people will die."

"Of course, there's always a third way," says Lucas.

Lucas and Ros approach the restaurant where the bomb is hidden.

Evacuation.

Implementing Lucas' Third Way..

...with a little help from Malcolm.

Success.

Elizabeta comes to find Lucas.

"Spasiba." Thank you.

"God, I've missed you."

"I have to go."
