Episode 11 - Treasure of the Nation
Locksley has been requisitioned "for military purposes" and the villagers thrown out. But the soldiers' food has been stolen - by Robin. Allan tells Gisborne about Robin's secret food store in the forest, and Gisborne is furious that he hasn't mentioned it before. |
Marian angrily protests to Gisborne about the clearing of the village. "How about the women and children who are being forced out of their homes?" |
"There is nothing I can do. The Sheriff has ordered it - no arguments!" |
"Not long ago you were willing to defy Prince John's men," says Marian.
"Yes, but the situation has now changed," retorts Gisborne. |
"Because the Sheriff is back?" she says. "While he was gone, I thought I saw a different side to you, Guy..." |
"...Kind. Brave..." |
"...I was mistaken." |
Allan leads Gisborne to the place where the outlaws have hidden the stolen food. Nightwatchman observes as the food is retrieved and taken back to Locksley. |
The Nightwatchman goes to Locksley to steal back the food for the villagers. |
But Gisborne finds her in the food store. |
They fight. |
Gisborne overpowers her. "Let's find out who you really are!" |
The Nightwatchman unmasked... |
"No..." |
"Not you..." |
In shock, he backs away and runs off. |
Later, he returns. "A year ago, I put this dagger into the Nightwatchman's side." |
"Show me." |
"Prepare the prisoner. We return to Nottingham." |
"Guy - " begins Marian.
"You... do not speak to me!" |
Awaiting her execution, Marian pleads with Gisborne for compassion. He is unmoved. "You're in league with Robin Hood. An outlaw. I warned you, the sentence would be death." |
"I was the Nightwatchman years before Robin returned." |
"Don't take me for a fool." |
"It all fits - the way that you behaved with me, your little rides into the forest... You were trusted here at the castle by all of us." |
"Every moment that I thought you were a friend to me, you were betraying me. Every day that I grew more and more to love you, you were mocking me." |
"It wasn't like that! I cared for you - I still care for you." |
"Shhh... " |
"You... are a liar." |
"I stayed at your side, when Prince John's men were threatening Nottingham. I could easily have left you!" |
Gisborne laughs in disbelief. And then... "You're nothing to me." |
"So you would rather I was put to death? Lose everything we've ever had or ever could have?" |
"I've lost far more than that already." |
Later, Gisborne notices smoke coming from Marian's room. |
But it's an escape attempt. Allan catches her as she runs for the door, and Gisborne hurls her across the room. |
"Did you expect me to sit here and wait to be executed?" |
"No, I expect you to know when you're beaten." |
"This isn't a game, Marian. When the Sheriff returns, you are going to die!" |
"Don't you have the courage to finish this yourself? After all my so-called betrayals, you should be glad to do it." |
"This is not my decision." |
"Then perhaps it should be. After all, you were the one who professed to love me." |
"Well I thought that I knew you." |
"But this is me. This is who I am, the Nightwatchman, everything. You say you love me and you don't know me." |
"I defended you against the Sheriff countless times - more than you know!" |
"And I deceived the Sheriff to help people, and in so doing I had to deceive you. And I'm sorry for that. But is it such a crime to follow my heart?" |
"Oh, the way that I followed mine?" |
"And always to your door. Marian, why did you have to put me in this position? Did you even once understand what I was feeling? Or thinking?" |
"When you left, I thought that I'd lost you for good. Perhaps it would have been better if I had." |
The Sheriff returns to the castle. |
He doesn't realise who the Nightwatchman is. Spotting Marian waiting in the courtyard, he says, "
Ah,
Marian, just in time for a little entertainment. We're going to execute the Nightwatchman." |
"I am ready," says Marian to Gisborne. |
Suddenly, the "Nightwatchman" appears on the castle walls. |
Gisborne calls to his men, "He's escaped, get after him!" He shoots a meaningful look at Marian, and runs off in pursuit. |
The "Nightwatchman" evades capture by hiding in a well. It's Allan. |
Gisborne returns to the Sheriff. "He's gone. The Nightwatchman's escaped." |
The Sheriff is not happy. "I will not tolerate incompetence!" he screams at Gisborne. "There is too much at stake now! Last chance, Gisborne." |
Gisborne and Allan come to see Marian. "You're safe," says Guy. |
"You did this for me," says Marian to Guy.
Allan doesn't want his part to go unrecongnised. "Er..."
"Both of you," corrects Marian.
"Well, what's being chased by angry soldiers between friends?" says Allan. |
Guy tells Allan to burn the Nightwatchman's clothes. "The Nightwatchman is no more. You will not get another chance," he tells Marian. She nods her agreement. |
"Thank you, you saved my life." Allan leaves. |
"After everything you said?" |
"You don't know me as well as you think." |
"Will you do something for me now?" he asks.
"Name it."
"Stay. And make this place bearable." |
"I will stay." |
"Thank you," she says. |
