The Vicar of Dibley

"I spent four weeks laughing my face off. Dawn is such fun to work with; there's a little child inside her who comes out when she gets on the set. It was hard to keep a straight face."[1]

Richard Armitage as Harry Kennedy in The Vicar of DibleyRichard Armitage played Harry Kennedy in the two final episodes of The Vicar of Dibley, broadcast over Christmas 2006.

The first of the two episodes, The Handsome Stranger, was the most watched programme on British TV on Christmas Day. The second episode, The Vicar in White, was broadcast a week later on New Year's Day.

Harry moves into the village at the beginning of the first episode. Geraldine is outraged at the thought of a newcomer from London moving in and taking no part in village life, so she and Alice go round to his cottage to confront the "townie bastard". But things don't go quite as planned.

The Vicar of Dibley is a comedy series that started in 1994 and stars Dawn French as Geraldine Granger, the newly assigned female vicar in the village of Dibley. Initially, much of the comedy came from the villagers' reactions to their woman vicar. The show was very topical, as the Church of England ordained its first women priests that year. But over the years, it settled down into a comedy of eccentric village characters. A running joke was Geraldine's lack of luck in love. Until Harry Kennedy moved to Dibley...

The Christmas episodes of the Vicar of Dibley won the Golden Rose Award in the Comedy category at the Rose D'Or international television festival 2007.

The Vicar of Dibley (and Harry) made one final appearance on television, on Red Nose Day, the culmination of Comic Relief 2007. See the Comic Relief page for further details.
